NORTH DEVON FARMHOUSE

This large rural garden on the west Devon coast had become tired and neglected. Previous owners had clearly once loved this secluded spot, leaving a legacy of ‘good bones’ – a screen of maple trees and hedges and internal walls protecting the garden from sea winds.
The new owners made the garden their priority while putting plans for the house on hold; first the garden was to have greater flow from one area to another with sweeping borders filled with roses and seasonal perennials, against a backdrop of shrub planting resilient to the elements.
New terraces for reading, dining and relaxation have been installed with a bespoke pergola and a kitchen potager for fruit and vegetables in the old walled garden.
Still a work in progress, this year sees a new terrace and porch to the front of the house enclosed by raised beds in local slate. The planned planting will have a more Mediterranean feel here to withstand the brunt of the salt-laden winds.
More details follow this summer as the planting develops.
